Riding the Dunes

There is much pleasure to be gained from useless knowledge.

The other day I posted a blog that wasn’t written in chalk.  I indicated we were good at writing our plans in chalk just so we could have plans.  However, we were just as good at erasing them.  Let’s see now … I think that was only three days ago.  At that time we were definitely sure that when we pulled out of Yuma we were heading to El Centro and after that we were on our way to Palm Springs.  We were definitely sure.

Stop and chat with Freddy before we hit the Dunes.  Heck, he may soon be our new neighbor ... maybe.

Then, in the blog after that I indicated the plans were subject to change after our activities on Wednesday.  You might guess those plans are just as easy to change as they are to make.

Our ride back to the park from checking out the Imperial Sand Dunes on Tuesday gave us some thoughts on a couple rides we wanted to take.  After all, we couldn’t be in a location with lots of sand dunes and not really ride the ATVs on them.  The beginning of the dunes were less than five miles from where we were currently parked.  We wouldn’t even have to load them on the trailer.  We could just ride them down.  That’s what we did but first of all we headed down the road toward Freddy's.  After all, he was closer to the dunes than we were.  We also talked to one of his neighbors who just happened to have ATVs and also knew where the dunes were and where the canal was.

It was fun and we loved it.  Riding on the sand is a lot different than riding on the trails.  However, it’s one of those things that we wanted to give a try.  Next we were off towards the fence that runs along the international border. The canal runs there and we wanted to ride along it too.  South we went.

At this point we were beginning to wonder why we were even considering pulling out of this area especially when we had just discovered all the great areas we hadn’t even visited yet.  We just need a few more days ... just a few more days.  We have a few things that are still undone.

We weren't through for the day yet either.  Next we headed for an area where we thought there might be a little digging and a few mines.  At least we had been told that was the case and from a distance it looked like that’s what we would find.  However, the shortcuts we wanted to take all had a little sign letting us know we weren't supposed to be in that area.

We found if we kept riding, we would eventually find a place that allowed us entry.  At least we’d be able to ride around the rocky area.  There were a few hikers and a couple cars in the area.  Obviously there had been some mining at one time.  We decided to leave this for another time.

By the time we arrived back at our motorhome we had decided we weren’t quite ready to leave the Yuma area yet.  You might imagine that the eraser came out and Friday plans to move were going to be changed.  We wouldn’t be going far.

‘Tis life on the road.

  1. As long as you are happy where you are and doing what you love, why go anywhere else. Just keep that old eraser handy...

  5. Those ATVs are really coming in handy for your fun-meters. It's nice to know that there still are great off road places to ride.

And riding along the boarder you probably scared off a couple of dozen illegals with that green ATV of yours. The Boarder Patrol guys could have taken the day off. :c)

  7. So glad you're having so much fun. I figured that sand would be different to ride in. Do the ATV's have any problems digging through the sand? And plans are made to be changed - isn't that the law now?
