House Arrest for “Q” Police ?

Dream as if you’ll live forever.  Live as if you’ll die today.
qsign
When out exploring the area around Quartzsite we drove by the Police Department in town several times.  We wondered why there were so many police cars parked at the station but never any around town.  Now the town of Quartzsite is small.  It’s actually smaller than small.  We also couldn’t understand why a town this small had so many police cars.

A couple years ago when we were here police cars were out ticketing cars along the roadways during the Big Tent.  They had lined the sides of the road and every one of the cars had been given a ticket.  Not so this year .... just about any place you want to park is open.  At least that's what it seems since many cars park right next to the "no parking" signs where it used to be off limits.  You also rarely see a police car around town … rarely.

We asked a few locals about it, read comments in the town paper and even picked up other stories online.  The difference between town politics in a small town versus a large town is that everyone knows what’s going on.  In a large town some of the news can actually be hidden inside other news.  That doesn’t appear to be the case in “Q”.  There are many small town rumors floating around about city council politics and special favors for special people.  We wondered if they were just rumors or if there was any truth to it.

According to a news article published by KWST News (Channel 13) most of the police officers in town are on administrative leave for telling the truth.  In other words the article refers to them as being under house arrest because they are confined to their home during what would be normal working hours.  Reportedly, the officers are on “house arrest” from 8 am – noon, and 1 pm – 5 pm.
police

The story from KWST indicated one of the city council candidates had warrants out on her.  The mayor indicated the officers were told by the Chief to ignore those warrants.  Eventually she was suspected of driving drunk and picked up for DUI.  The officers who picked her up got in trouble.  She screamed and shouted that the Chief had her protected and that they couldn't do anything to her.  The video taken by the arresting officer of the events was turned in and put in the police file.  That video has since disappeared from the file.

An emergency was called and The Desert Freedom Press printed that under that “emergency” the police chief suspended ALL officers who had filed criminal and ethical complaints against him.  They were placed under house arrest.

The town currently has a shortage of police officers working.  I believe I read there are only four police officers who aren’t on administrative leave including the Police chief.   The Mayor had requested assistance from the state government but was having trouble getting anyone to respond.  The La Paz County Sheriff was then called in to help.  However, some locals really are not too pleased with that either since the Police Chief and the Sheriff have both worked together previously.

The local newspaper is full of letters to the editor regarding what residents consider corruption. After hearing and reading the stories of the goings on in this town, we were left to wonder why the State of Arizona or Attorney General or FBI hasn’t stepped in to investigate. Maybe they have.  Or, why voters don’t remove the folks they feel should be removed. It seems many of the people in town are only part-year residents. Thus, not entitled to a voice in city issues.

In addition there is also a rumor floating around about misconduct from the Police Chief.  Is it true he refuses to take a report or even arrest one of his officers on child rape? Check the blog out here.    Is it true he has harassed local city businesses who oppose him?  Is it true he spied on certain residents who had been outspoken about misconduct looking for evidence of wrong doing? Does he bully, badger, harass and ticket those opposing him?  Does he cover up evidence and unlawful actions?  I don't know the answer to any of those questions.  However, the bosstownsfolk of Quartzsite sure express a lot of opinions about the questions.

Is there more to the stories in this town? Why don’t the voters take a stand? Is the Police Chief in this little town really corrupt?  Should law enforcement be above the law?

Some of the most interesting reading I've done in years has been about the town affairs of Quartzsite. The reading has reminded me of the town Boss Hogg ran in the Dukes of Hazard. Is the Boss alive, is it clean-up time in Quartzsite or is this just Hogg-wash?

The little town of Quartzsite definitely needs the hoards of visitors who show up each January and February.  The Big Tent, the people and all the money floating around helps with the economy of the town.  Without this influx of cash, the town would definitely be struggling.

Are normal licensing procedures also ignored in order to encourage sales during this time?  There is another rumor floating around regarding the issuance of Arizona health food cards being issued to temporary food handling vendors without questioning and even without the need to show up or any food handling knowledge.  Is this true?    It might make us think twice next time we order a hot dog from a local vendor or eat in a local restaurant.

There are lots of questions about this little town.  I don’t know the answer.  I wonder if anyone really does.  I also wonder if any of them ever will be answered.   Then, are they true or are they false?   I must admit though after reading comments left on other blogs by city officials, I felt better posting this one after we left town and we were out of there  .... just to be safe.

‘Tis just an interesting life on the road.

Blogger’s Party in “Q”

Red meat is not bad for you.  Now blue-green meat, that’s bad for you!
longlines
Here it is the end of January.  The Big Tent is still going strong.  The BLM is still filled with hundreds .. no, I mean thousands of RVs.  It definitely is getting to be about time we left for another place and other things to do.  We've been here a mighty long time  We were down to  seven rigs and that was even after friends of Steve and Carol pulled in.  Then, on Saturday it was down to four after the Dahls and Dwyers pulled out.  On Sunday it will be down to three.  Our numbers certainly went down fast.

It was just a short time ago that we were so packed in here that we had to measure and figure out where we could possibly put any more RVs.  That’s not the case today.  The lines around town are still very, very long but the lines at the dump seem to be getting shorter.  At least it was pretty short yesterday.  We actually noticed the line with only one rig in it.  Remember that earlier in the week we saw 32 RVs in that line.

Next week the Big Tent changes.  Vendors currently there will switch out with several other groups including the hobby and craft folks.  A big car show will also start bringing in more people with their RVs.   With so much going on it's really hard to keep track of all the activities, events and when they will take place.

Fantastic food and lots of it
Thursday Paul and Marti fixed lots of yummy hors d'oeuvres and had their own little blogger’s party. Everyone was invited.  Blogging seems to connect RVers.  It’s always fun to meet folks, chat for an hour or two and eat more food.  The nice thing about a blogging party is that even though you haven’t met the folks face to face before you really know all about them from their blog.  That seems to be the life of RVing.  This was no different.  Stories were shared, places to visit recommended and embellishments ran rampid.  It was a great time.  Bloggers in attendance other than the hosts and the writer of this blog were Bob and Linda, Ron and Linda and Diana.  Also, Ed was there even though his wife wasn’t and she’s really the writer of their blog.  Carol and Steve also enjoyed the food, conversation and people.

Terry is getting pretty proficient at filling the 40 gallon water bladder and then transferring the water to the motorhome.  He’s also getting pretty good at using the blueboy and making trips to the dump.  This is a job (or, rather a chore) that isn't needed everyplace.  When we're boondocking though it sure makes it convenient not to have to move the motorhome.

I ran to take a picture of him ….. dropped my camera and broke the display.  Needless to say, I certainly wasn’t a happy camper.  I can’t remember the last time I was without a camera.  The sad part is that there isn’t even a Fry’s Electronics around to replace the one I broke.

An evening circle around the campfire is almost expected especially if the wind isn't blowing.  Some folks come and others not so much.  It's nice to be able to share the fire and the stories with those who also enjoy sitting around it.  It's just a nice way to end the day.  And, that we did.

Sunday is now here and we'll soon be on the road again.

Food at “Q’s” Grubstake and Tire Troubles

There’s no next time.  It’s now or never.

Sometimes get togethers and meals out are impromptu.  That was the case on Tuesday.  It was definitely an impromptu event.  Not everyone was present at the campsite when Toni and Doug got home from working and suggested we all go out to eat.  A few of us were and off we went to the Grubstake Restaurant.  Our wait wasn’t too long for the table but once seated we had quite a wait for the food.  With folks to laugh and talk with, it wasn’t so bad.  It was still fun eating out and being with some pretty great people.

Steve, Terry Doug, Toni, Carol ------ Jeri, Deb, Marti, Mike, Paul

At least it was fun while we were there.  It wasn't so fun for a few overnight.  They got sick!!  Paul had the fish.  He got sick.  Toni had the seafood platter.  She got sick too.    Carol also had the fish but didn't get sick so go figure. Terry had the driest hamburger ever.  He got sick too but we're thinking his portion wasn't from the hamburger but because he had way more carbs than he eaten in a while.

A few days ago I posted a photo of our torn up tire and mentioned that we had been to the Big Tent and ordered tires.  We were all set to have them installed on Tuesday.  Wait a minute …. I need to rephrase that.  We thought we were all set to have them installed on Tuesday.  Our Jeep was dropped off at one of the tents that had been set up for repairs and installations of various items sold by vendors in the Big Tent.  Before dropping it off we checked to be sure the tires were there and had been assured they were.  The job was to be completed within the next hour and we’d  be on our way back to camp by 12:30.  Obviously, that didn’t happen or I wouldn’t be telling this story.

petes

When we returned to pick up our vehicle, we discovered that the wrong tires were ordered and the wrong size tires were delivered.  Back to the vendor booth we went.   Of course, apologies were said and in order to make it right, they assured us they could have the correct tires delivered and installed the next day.  That was great …..  right?  Well, not so fast as there was a catch.  The correct tires would cost us an additional $68 per tire (plus tax).  What?  Was this a bait and switch?  We didn’t know. What we did know is that we weren’t buying tires from Pete’s.  We’ll buy tires when we get to Yuma from someone else but it certainly won’t be Pete’s.

landshark

The little sign has a special little meaning for our family.  See …. Michael, there really are LANDSHARKS!!

The lines are very long in Quartzsite.  We thought they were long before.  The other day we counted 32 RVs in line at the dump station.  We've decided to avoid the town area where the lines are longer yet.  The BIG Tent will come to an end this weekend.  Some people around will head out.  Others will start to show up for the huge craft fair and the car show.  Most of the folks in our little group have already pulled out.  We're just dragging our feet but we'll be on the road soon heading either north or south.  The exact place is yet to be determined.

For now ... 'Tis just life on the road.

Making Memories in “Q” with Our RV Group

Memory... is the diary that we all carry about with us.groupphoto20124x6

Carol is a professional photographer.  We are so very lucky to have her as part of our group.  Other groups take pictures in the desert and the result is shadows and fuzzy focus. Being the professional she is, we ended up with a very professional photo even considering the group she had to work with.  Thank you, Carol!

She took the big group picture several days ago and I started to post it then except we had more folks arrive.  I was hoping we’d be able to get another photo of the others and post it at the same time.  Well, it didn’t really happen.

We had some pretty strong winds and folks' calendars got pretty full.  It was hard to schedule the photo while there was still light on the desert.  Before we knew it others were leaving.  In other words, it just didn't work out.  Maybe the idea of the camera scared them off.

I wanted a photo of everyone who had shared our campfire this year with us.  So, with camera in hand, that was the goal even though timing wasn't right and shadows were everywhere.  At least I got the picture and here they are.

Well, we didn’t get them all.  Bea and Peter snuck out before we got them in the group picture but here's a picture of the two of them that was posted previously.

That’s the post for today and 'tis just life on the road.

Another Flat on the Way to the Big Tent

.
To be able to fill leisure intelligently is the last product of civilization.

Last I wrote we were heading to the Big Tent in Quartzsite on Sunday.  That we did.  We expected to see huge crowds and lines.  Actually, it wasn’t bad and traffic was even fairly light considering the Big Tent was opened and it was a weekend.  Now Monday morning was another thing.  The traffic was backed up for miles and lines were everywhere around town.  It appears everyone else decided to wait until the weekend was over to visit.

We pulled out early Sunday morning to visit the Big Tent.  We had a minor slow down.  It was another flat tire!!  That’s right … it was the second flat tire in about two weeks. Why is it that every time Terry goes off road at the BLM and I get the car next, the tire goes flat?

Last time I had the little Coach-Net card in my purse.  This time I had my travel bag and no Coach-tire2Net card.  However, we were lucky.  Jim had returned to Quartzsite with Sandie.  So, guess who we called??  Sure enough we called Jim.  He came to our aid just like we knew he would.  Isn’t it nice to have friends who have the right tools and a working vehicle to get to you when you need them?

Eventually, we did make the Big Tent.  There were lots of people but it wasn’t quite as bad as we imagined it would be.  There is one thing we bought or rather two things.  We bought tires.  Obviously, we needed them.  The tires were ordered and will be installed on Tuesday.  At least we don’t have to make a trip to Yuma now.

Vendors did seem to be doing well.  We saw lots of bags and purchases.  We also noticed most of the food vendors were busy serving food.  Tables were full and people were doing more than just resting their feet at the tables.  They were eating!!

People will be pretty busy for about another week going back and forth to the Big Tent.  That’s about how long they’ll have to visit and find something to purchase.  After that they’ll have to resort back to the vendor booths that are scattered all over town.  Quartzsite is definitely an experience.  It’s one of those places that needs to be on everyone’s bucket list.

Monday the clouds rolled in and folks in our group started to move south.  We actually lost four rigs but we’re  intending to catch up with a couple of them again around the Yuma area.  Well, at least we hope to.

We checked around with our crowd and found a few willing to try again for a nice meal out.   Some were working, some weren’t home, others had eaten and some even had other plans.  So, nine of us met for dinner at the Q-Town Café.  With all the people in town you can guess that we had quite a wait.  However, the food was good, the waitress fantastic and our table-mates the greatest.

Stampede through Quartzsite’s Big Tent

Wear short sleeves! Support your right to bare arms!
tent
The Big Tent is really the big event in Quartzsite.  This is the time hoards of RVs and people swarm this little town in the middle of nowhere.  Just about everyone with an RV shows up to check it out.  How do we know just about everyone with an RV shows up?  All you have to do is look around and see all the RVs.  We’re sure every RV owner in three states is somewhere around here.  The place is packed.  Obviously, we are no exception because we are here too.

Sunday was our turn to go.  Well, I could rephrase that.  People don’t really take turns.  They show up at the same time and push each other through the walkways.  It’s big.  It’s really big.  It’s open for nine whole days and during that time herds of people stampede through.  The vendors are competing for  wallets filled with cash.  It’s like a migration.  Those that don’t move, get trampled.
protection copy
Now walking through the tent can be extremely frustrating.  You always have those who walk four abreast making it almost next to impossible to get around them and on your way.  If these same four walked at a decent pace it wouldn’t be so bad but they don’t.  They meander along making sure to block everything you want to see.  They also stop right in the middle of the walkways just to talk.  Then, there are others who push and shove so you just go sailing by the little booths you actually came to check out.  It can be rough in there.  Everyone is on their own.  All the little strollers that block the booths aren’t really baby carriers.  Some might even be empty but others are dog carriers.  Some of the more aggressive shoppers use the strollers.  Occasionally you’ll feel them on your heels and in your back.   Maybe next year maybe we’ll take a stroller with us just as a defense tool.  Dress for it and be prepared.  It’s a dog eat dog world and the Big Tent is evidence of just that.

All this commotion, all the pushing, shoving and crowds just means more people are shopping and hopefully, spending.  It’s a great time.  It’s something we certainly don’t want to miss ….. but neither do all the others.  Tomorrow I’ll try to give you a little view of what’s actually there that causes all this fluff.  For now ... we're getting ready to head and check it out ourselves.

Desert Bar - The Solar Bar

Always and never are two words you should always remember never to use.

A very popular outing from Quartzsite is the Desert Bar.  You buy one of their t-shirts while there and you’ll be surprised how many comments you'll get when wearing it from folks wherever you travel the rest of the year.  Folks recognize this very popular and fun place.  Actually, it’s a bar but it’s much more than that.  It’s a place to congregate in the middle of nowhere where there are no power poles, no telephone either by cell or otherwise and absolutely no electricity other than what’s provided through solar panels.

bar1
The Desert Bar is located five miles north of Parker and about five miles down a dirt unmaintained road from there.  Obviously the last five miles are twisty, with lots of turns and bumps.  The place is open during snowbird season on the weekends only.  The crowds pack into the place to listen to the bands or just experience a unique outing with friends. The bar is fully functional.  Long lines form at the food vendors.

church
Our group was no exception.  We had been there before but that didn’t mean we couldn’t go again.  And, that we did.  We piled into different cars and headed north to the Desert Bar.  On the way back we stopped at the Wal-Mart in Parker.  With all the activity and RVs in the area, many of their shelves were empty.  Much of the meat was gone, paper plates were gone and just about everything we went there for.  You could certainly tell the snowbirds were back.

band
The band is in the background.
The wind was blowing pretty strong when we pulled out of Quartzsite.  When we got back we noticed our little tacky cabin was no longer up.  Evidently while we were gone our cabin took the brunt of the blast from the gusts.  Thus, it has been rolled up and put away to be used at another time in another place.   That's one thing we do notice in this area occasionally .... the wind.  However, the winds of Saturday are now gone and we don't expect them to return until Wednesday again.  I guess once a week is nothing to complain about especially if the sun shines the rest of the time.  However, we may even see a sprinkle or two of rain.  We shouldn't complain really because other places are getting more than their share of snow and at least we aren't shoveling that stuff.

group1
This is a silly group but it's our group with some of the nicest people you'll ever meet!

The crowds are here.  Over the last few days it seems the RVs around the area have certainly doubled.  We had hoped to have another group dinner together at one of the local restaurants.  However, we’ve come to the conclusion that this absolutely will not work.  There are just too many orderpeople in town to be able to book a group at one of the local restaurants.  Oh well ….. we still have lots of wood to feed the campfire.  We can sit around the campfire and eat instead.

This has been one of the largest gatherings our group has had.  Now not everyone has been able to come at the same time but everyone still gets counted. We've met a lot of new folks this year and reunited with others. As of today we will have 15 RVs parked kinda in our circle. I'm saying "kinda" because we don't really have a circle.  It's a partial circle with two rows in spots and even three rows in other spots.  In addition to the 15 here, we have had six others visit and move on to other places.   Maybe next year our goal can be to see if we can put those wagons in a real circle.  However, I think everyone has to arrive at about the same time to do that.  We have also learned that Quartzsite is definitely the place for the reunions.  This one has been the best ever.

Sunday ….. we’re off to the Big Tent.  Then, we'll take next week one day at a time .....  will we be here or will we be someplace else?  Heck, we don't even know that.

‘Tis life on the road.

Side Trip to Castle Dome Ghost Town

minesignA life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable but more useful than a life spent doing nothing.

We have a little white board that keeps track of activities for our group.  On the white board we had scheduled a group photo.  Our professional photographer lined us all up and did a great job.  That was originally going to be the photo of the day.  But now we have about ten new faces that have arrived since or will be arriving.  We need a picture of them before we post the other photo.  So, we'll just have to wait for that one.

Another scheduled activity on the white board was the Friday trip  to the ghost town of Castle Dome.  It is an old mining town about 45 miles south.  The town first produced silver and then produced lead.  Instead of copying what is already available online, you can Google it if interested.

We pulled out about 10:30 and returned about 5 hours later.    Not all of our group went but a good portion of us were also interested as well as curious enough to see what was there.

The settlement was old and many of the buildings had been reconstructed.  It was first established in about 1863 and partially existed until about 1988.  The town was extremely interesting to walk through.  We even discovered that Castle Dome was on the list of the Japanese to bomb during WWII should the war spread to US soil.  So much lead was produced (9,000,000 pounds) during that time period that it was considered one of their primary targets to destroy.

We are continuing to play muscial RVs.  Friday morning we had two RVs move out.  Kimberly and Jerry moved closer to town so they could work at the Big Tent starting on Saturday.  Dave and Nancy moved a couple miles south of town to a new group.  We got them a few days and the other group gets them a few days.  We want them back!!
church

We also had three new rigs move in ………….. including the returning rig of Jim and Sandie.  Sandie just couldn’t stand being in Apache Junction with all of us in Quartzsite.  Even though Jim has surgery scheduled later this month she convinced him that they needed to spend a few more days with us.  We were all happy about that too.

When Jim and Sandie headed back to Apache Junction a week or so ago the crowds weren’t quite here yet.  Well, they are now.

lines
Check out the lines at the dump now!!  Terry emptied our tanks a little by using our little blue boy.
Today it’s off to the Desert Bar. That’s actually just about the last event this little group has planned for January. When the crowds grow parking places become harder to find.  The Big Tent becomes the entertainment and it’s just about time for everyone to think about moving on.

crowds
Activity on Kuehn -- hardly a parking spot available
The Big Tent opens today.  It'll run for nine days.  Toni, Doug and Lyn will be working with the vendors at the Big Tent.  The Big Tent is what many of these RV'ers come to town for.   They come to check it out and then they start going elsewhere.  That’s not so good for the town but really good for the RV'ers left  behind.  Once they are gone it’s easier to find a place to sit at in a restaurant and the lines aren’t so long every place else.

Our Own Celebrity RV Chef

Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else.

kayndan
Tuesday morning we had breakfast catered from a personal chef. This wasn’t just any personal chef.  It was also a TV celebrity.  No, we’re not talking about Robert Irvine, Bobby Flay or even Gordon Ramsey.  It was Kay, the personal chef from Good Morning Nebraska.  Breakfast burritos had been specially made for our group and transported from Yuma.  It was a great treat and we sure did appreciate them.  Not many folks can actually say they have arranged something this special for their groups.  We go all out for ours.  Well, Kay is the one who really went all out for our group.  Our campfires are usually reserved for the evening but we figured this would also be a good time for a campfire.  And, we did just that.

By the way,  Kay and Dan are also part of our little group but they are in staying in Yuma instead of Quartzsite with us. She actually is the only celebrity among us.  Thanks, Kay!

January is definitely party month in Quartzsite.  Crowds of people are everywhere.  They fill up the restaurants, back up the roads, cause lines at grocery stores and even make the BLM look full.  It’s not as much fun to be in Quartzsite all by yourself though.  Most of the fun is getting together with others.  Sometimes you know the folks and sometimes you don’t.  There are always new friends to be made.  We’ve been doing just that.

With the crowds also come long lines at the dump.  The alternative is to hire a dumping service such as The Duck. The Duck will pump you out for a $35 fee.  Thus, there is no need to wait in the long lines.  We all make choices.   You can do it for free … what else is there to do?  Or, hand over a few bucks and have it done for you.

The crowds will continue to grow at least for another a week. Most of the get togethers happen before the Big Tent opens up.  When the Big Tent arrives so do the people.  When the Big Tent pulls out of town so will a lot of people.

Our game of musical coaches has continued.  Shortly after our special catered breakfast, Joe and Margarite pulled out for Phoenix.  Joe will be back but Margarite was off to New York.  Kimberly and Jerry from Hit the Road Jack blog pulled in.  We had not met Kimberly and Jerry but had followed their blog.  It’s always nice to meet fellow bloggers.  We understand Jerry was a little leery meeting us though.  Kimberly had him convinced we were a strange bunch.  She may be right.  However, I think she even went so far as to tell him we were part of the nudist group!! Believe me when I say THAT IS NOT SO!   I guess if they disappear one morning, we'll know we really did scare him off.

Later in the day we got together for our planned potluck.  We eat a lot but I guess that's obvious.

On Tuesdays there is a music jam in the BLM.  We had often talked about going but by the time Tuesday rolled around, we usually forgot about it.  This time we didn’t.  The sun was shining, the wind was calm and the music fantastic.  Next Tuesday we plan on going again.

Not everyone was awake and attentive at the music jam.  We caught one fellow nodding off.  We thought he must certainly be enjoying himself as the music just lulled him to sleep.

Haven't seen an accordian in years AND I used to play one.

Wednesday we had one more motorhome join our group.  It was that of Connie and Kenny.  They are friends of Marsha and Paul.  Marsha and Paul are in Texas this year instead of Arizona.  We promised we’d be nice to their friends.

Terry and Ed off to explore

Shopping at the Big Tent will probably be the most popular entertainment beginning next week. However, we do have a white board for other ideas. Anything planned gets written on the board. Interested participants just sign up. So far on Thursday we have a Windows Live Writer review scheduled plus a professional photographer will take a group picture, a trip to Castle Dome Ghost Town and Museum on Friday and the Desert Bar on Saturday. Everyone has to visit the Desert Bar at least once. It’s close to Parker but about 5 miles off the paved road and totally run by solar. It’s definitely a unique place.

That's the plan.  After that ….. well, everyone will soon start meandering to other places. It does sound like we will meeting up with Freddy and Delcie again in Yuma and Ed and Lyn at the Thousand Trails park in Palm Springs so the party won’t be quite over for a while yet.  It will just be relocated.
