Goodbye Laughlin, Anchors Away for Justin

Worrying works! 90% of the things I worry about never happen.

Laughlin at night

We left Bullhead City and Laughlin behind.  The wind blew every day.  It even blew when the forecast indicated it wouldn’t be blowing.  It blew and it blew and it blew.  We were due to leave on Monday, eight days after arrival.  We went to bed Saturday night with a change of plan and knowing that Sunday was going to be the day.  At that time winds were predicted to be the lightest of any day since we arrived.  Monday the winds were supposed to be back.  We figured our escape just had to be on Sunday. It was only later that we discovered the forecast had been changed as Monday winds were to be calm.  It was obvious we just had to make plans and go for it without paying too much attention to what was in the forecast.  Our guess was as good as theirs.

What did we wake to?  We woke to howling gusts of wind.  As we waited for sunlight, we checked the prediction (not that we would believe the accuracy) for the day and looked for a window of calm.  There wasn’t a window but we were going anyway.  We had a 7 1/2 mile 6% climb uphill and then through some open canyons.  If the gusts were 30 mph on the desert floor what could the gusts be through the canyons?  We didn’t care because we were going even if we had to crawl.  We had no plans of looking back or even coming back.

We also discovered groceries were really expensive in Bullhead City.  Terry compared prices to some at Quartzsite and "Q" won.  The nicest part of being in Bullhead City was getting together with Kellie and George!  She told us she had learned that the wind only blows twice there.  Once for six months from the north and once for six months from the south.

A few Laughlin casinos

Bullhead city / Laughlin area is a tourist area and a lot of people love it.  They have some great waterfront campgrounds – Camp Davis and the Katherine Landing area.  For the time we hung around we never had a single day we could sit outside.  It was chilly and windy and then after that wind left even more wind came back.  Sunday was it.  We weren’t hanging around.  What we knew is that we were going.

It wasn’t an uneventful travel day either.   The travel itself was shorter than the rest of the trip. We rarely have days like this and for that we’re thankful.  It started with a broken pipe spraying water all over at the campground in the morning and ended in Las Vegas with a broken taillight and missing paint down the side panel.  Actually, enough said.  It wasn’t a good day.

After a rather unpleasant experience getting into our new site with the motorhome, trailer and car,  we headed to the club house to check out the tourist brochures.  Last year we found buffet coupons for 50% off at Terrible’s Casino.  With a coupon in hand that’s where we went for dinner … $9 for two of us.  We needed it.

To relieve the stress of the day the hot tub was next on the agenda.  However about that time we got a call from Justin.  It was his birthday (remember from yesterday’s post?).  However, he had other news to share.  He had received his orders.  He wasn’t going to be meeting any west coast girls as we hoped.  He was going to be hanging around the east coast for a little longer.  More Florida schooling is in his future as well as Norfolk, Virginia and off to sea!  We’re not thrilled with this but we’re still very proud of him.

What a day.  We’re glad it’s behind us.  T’was a harrowing day on the road and I don’t have pictures to prove.  Of course not having pictures was intentional.

  2. That was our biggest complaint about the Bullhead City/Laughlin area...the wind. We have hung out there so many times in the past and it was never as windy as it was this past year, but all weather has been different.

Safe travels and have some fun!

  3. I find it hard to believe that the Q was cheaper! I thought that place was so expensive. Shows what I know.

  5. You've just explained why it's always windy when we've been to Laughline, thought it was just our luck. Now I'm relieved.

Great news about Justin, he'll enjoy sea duty, it will be good for his career. Hopefully the Norfolk girls are ready for him! ;c)

Hope you find a good hot tub, I'm jealous!

  6. We're hearing that there are wind advisories tomorrow in the Zion National Park area (where we will be for the next four days). At least we've arrived before it started. We're also thinking that we may stop in Laughlin on our way back to Central Coast California. Thanks for the pictures. It looks like a pretty nice place.
