Northwest Summer "to do" List - Cabin Woes

The more we do, the more we can do; the more busy we are, the more leisure we have.

Usually when we arrive in Washington we have a lot of things on our “to do” list.  One of those things is cleaning out under the bed in the motorhome.  It seems everything we really don’t want to throw away gets tucked in there.  By the time winter is over that space under the bed is pretty full.  This year it was no exception.  We were glad to take everything out and sort it.  Down to the storage shed all the  keepers went.  Cleaning that storage shed is another thing on our list but we just haven’t done that yet either.  I'm thinking we have all summer to get that done.  Terry's thinking he wants it done yesterday.  Ugh!

Another thing we needed to do was make the rounds including a stop at my 93-year-old Aunt Jenny’s place.  She’s still pretty spry but not quite as spry as she was.  We all know how that is.  The other stop we made was to visit my oldest brother and check on him.  He’s living in a retirement home in Portland and pretty much by himself.  We’ll be helping him move to another location in a couple of weeks but he's doing good too.  I forgot about taking pictures until later in the day.

There was one more thing we needed to do right away.  We needed to check on our cabin and see how it weathered the winter.  Last year we found a mess. The weeds were high and a tree had poked a hole in the side.   Thus, we were really dreading what we might find on our trip to check it out.  However, we were pleasantly surprised.  It was in great condition.  All the new gravel we had poured last year had settled nicely.  There were few weeds and no damage to the cabin.   We were happy.

We’re not sure what we’re going to do with it.  We’re actually toying with selling it.  The property just doesn’t get the use we intended it to get.  Last year we also had a problem with getting a good Dish Network signal.   We’ve only been able to get two out of the three satellites we need which lets you know exactly how lucky we are even to get one.  As time goes on the trees on the hillside properties are continuing to grow and eventually there might not be any signal.

The cabin is in a gated lake community and the idea of it seemed nice but we just don’t spend much time there.  It has two RV sites on it but we only used it about three weeks last year.  The kids are busy and they don't use it either.  Not sure what we’ll do but we also know that properties are not selling like they were and prices have dropped.  We're not sure we're into taking a loss for it.  Even if we do list it for sell, it may take a while to sell it and that’s fine too. We know several folks trying to sell their property.  Times are tough and property isn't selling.  We may just be part of that group if we list it for sale.

At least I can now say some of the things on our “Northwest Bucket List” are accomplished.  The more we get done, the sooner we can do more playing around.  We have trails to check out and beaches to visit.  The problem is other things have to be done first.

‘Tis life on the road.

  1. GOod to hear the cabin weathered the winter okay. I understand how hard it is to make the choice to sell or not to sell.

Who'd have thought we'd see the day property was a millstone around your neck instead of an investment?

How much desert sand did you find under the bed?

  2. You always check with the Local Realitors to see how the properties in the area are selling. Maybe hold off another year even though it's another year of expenses out of your pocket. It's the old pros verses cons scale all over again. Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

  3. I'm glad your cabin was OK after the winter. Like with our house it is always exciting to get back to the property after a long time away. And a building always give you a lot of work. As we get older large properties are not easy to keep up. My dad is in that situation now. Big house and big lot and no way he can maintain it.

  4. I know the storage under my bed is FULL - with what I don't know !! LOL So that's also on my "to-do" list when I eventually get back to NL.

I dare say 1/2 of it won't be going with me the next time.

  5. I have always loved our place but I agree that if you don't use it why keep it? Glad the place was in good shape when you arrived.

I hope when am 93 years old...I can say the work spry let alone act like it. Enjoy your week.

  6. Too bad that you are not using your cabin. Hope that you will be able to get your money out of it!
