Just One Night Along the Road

"If your ship doesn't come in, swim out to it."

We’ve been in an established RV park for almost two weeks now.  It’s not often  we stay in a park __00blm2_thumb[4]this long unless it’s a Thousand Trails park or an RPI park.  This is a park where folks can stay if they have a membership in Escapees.  Most folks who spend the winter here are leaseholders of the lots so when they migrate south for the winter, the migration usually stops at the park and on their own site.  That’s quite different than the other membership parks we’ve stayed at.

-- Huge sites on the BLM

When we pull into one of our own membership parks we know most folks will only be around for two or three weeks.  After their short stay they move on to another park.  Many rotate back and forth between a couple parks all winter long.  By doing this their snow birding activities are extremely cheap.  Of course, membership fees have to be calculated into those fees but no matter, membership parks can save you money but only if you use them.  We haven’t been using ours as much as we should.  Maybe next year …………….

At the park we are currently at we have watched RVs come and go over the last couple of weeks.  We’ve been amazed at how many people with huge RVs struggle getting into a site close to dusk and only for one night.  It can take quite a while to get a big rig into a site, get setup and unhooked too.   This isn’t a park with pull-thrus.  The site across from us has had several one night guests.  One motorhome _0d15_2I’m sure was 50’ long (okay I’m exaggerating).  It came in just before dark and pulled out early the next day.  Another extra long 5th wheel was there the next night.  Again, it arrived just before dark, struggled for a while and finally settled for one full day and two nights.

Full 2nd Row ----

When we need a site on our way through, we stop where we don’t have to unhook.  Since we’ve been pulling a trailer for the last couple of years, we have made it a point to either stop where we can have a pull-thru or find a Wal-mart.  We certainly would not like to unhook at each and every stop.  To us it’s kind of like folks looking for a parking spot close to the door of the store they want to go into.  They’ll drive around and drive around waiting for a close site to become available.  Eventually, that will happen but when it does so much time has passed that they could have already been shopping.

We also know many RVs aren’t really equipped for boondocking but that’s where Google Maps can help.

Google Maps give an idea of what the RV sites are like.

Different strokes for different folks.  Aren’t we glad not everyone likes the same things?

‘Tis life on the road.

  1. If we're staying a couple of nights I don't mind getting into a spot but if it's only a night, I want a Walmart or a casino where we don't have to unhook. Too much work. And if we do stop in a park, we only hook up the electric unless it's a longer stay.

  2. all that work for one night hardly seems worth the trouble or the cost, Walmart or a Casino gets my vote too!

  3. I got burned by a KOA in Ohio once where they charged me $50 for one night! Then people tell me I'm cheap when I stay at a Walmart or a Flyng J.

When campgrounds wake up and realize they could fill up their park every night if they charged a reasonable rate, there'd be fewer Wallydockers out there.

  5. I get a kick out of the folks who pull in for one night and go through the entire deployment procedure, all utilities, chairs, slides, patio mat and wheel covers. All for one night. Fun to watch.

  6. We do a lot of Walmarts, truck stops and even a casino but even if we stop for one night we unhook. Pretty easy to do and much more comfortable not dealing with a sloping bed or "running" downstairs.

  7. I stop at a lot of Walmarts when in travel mode. If I'm only staying one night at a park it's because I need to dump my tanks, fill my fresh water, and hook up to electricity to recharge my batteries. But, if I'm doing all than I'm usually staying more than one night. I feel sorry for people who don't know how to live in their rigs without hookups.
