Boston’s War of 1812 and July 4th Celebrations

I believe in America. I've been proud to be an American .... all of my life.

Boston is the place to be if you like celebrations.  Rolled into its Harborfest the folks of that town are  putting on one of the largest festivals around.  Not only are they celebrating America's Independence t2humbnail.aspxDay but also the War of 1812.  Remember your history lesson on that war?  It was the first time that the United States had been threatened on its own soil.  It was also the war that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the “Star Spangled Banner”.

The fleet of at least 18 naval ships converging in Boston includes sailors and Marines from the United States, Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, Indonesia, Germany, Norway, Denmark, Canada and England.  From the US Navy alone there are about 5,000 sailors taking part in the festivities.  This celebration is a tribute to the sailors, marines and  Coast Guard who participated in the War of 1812 as well as celebrating America's birthday.

Why do we care about a celebration on the other coast?  Justin is in Boston and participating in the celebration.  His ship is open for touring.  When we sent our boy off to Norfolk we knew we would follow his travels when we could.  He tells us he loves ship life.  We knew he would.  We’re swelling with pride!

Enjoy your day!!

Happy Birthday, America!

  4. Congrats to Justin, I'll bet he's having the time of his life in Boston.

However, as for the statement "It was the first time that the United States had been threatened on its own soil", you do realize, of course, that the U.S. started the War of 1812?

When President James Madison signed a Congress approved Declaration of War on June 18, 1812 it was the first time that the United States had declared war on another nation.

Anyway, I'm just happy that Canada was not annexed by the U.S. and that we are now great friends, allies and have been able to celebrate our countries birthday's within a few days of one another.

Hope you enjoy a great July 4th!

  5. HAHA ... I do realize that the US was the one who declared the war. We felt it was a necessary evil. Well, not sure if we thought it was evil then but we did feel it was necessary at the time. I also know we attempted to swallow Canada up but it didn't happen ... obviously. It's a good thing that we're such good neighbors and great allies.
